സംവാദം:கதிரவன்
The Tamil pronunciation would have the last n and it should be കതിരവന് . I don't know why the pronunciation is changed.--C.R.Selvakumar(talk) 19:02, 29 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2010 (UTC)
- Dear Selva, the tamil pronounciation of கதிரவன், when transcribed to Malayalam should be കതിരവൻ and not കതിരവന്, as far as I understand. The five letters ல், ண், ர், ள், ன், when not combined with other letters (most of the times at the end of words) are written by special scripts ൽ, ൺ, ർ, ൾ and ൻ. For example, Ravanan is transcribed in Malayalam as രാവണൻ. (See [this|http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%B0%E0%B4%BE%E0%B4%B5%E0%B4%A3%E0%B5%BB_%28%E0%B4%A4%E0%B4%AE%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%B4%E0%B5%8D%E2%80%8C%E0%B4%9A%E0%B4%B2%E0%B4%9A%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%9A%E0%B4%BF%E0%B4%A4%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%B0%E0%B4%82%29].). The letters ല്, ണ്, ര്/റ്, ള്, ന് when used at the end of words, are normally read as "Samvrutha Ukara". Please let me know if this clarifies the issue. Otherwise, I will try to record the sounds and send them to you. Thanks--Keral8(talk) 05:55, 30 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you Keral8, I think I understand your point. The last letter is not visible except to show as a rectangle in my screen. Would this generic rectangle be pronounced as n ?Like n in Raman ? Then it would be fine. Is this Samvrutha Ukara, a kind of short ukara added to the pure consonant when pronounced? or a shortening of the full ukara attached to the original consonant? Thanks for clarifying it for me.--C.R.Selvakumar(talk) 13:24, 30 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2010 (UTC)
- These characters are known as chillus and you're correct about the pronunciation of these. If they are not displayed correctly on your browse, you can try the help mentioned here. About Samvrutha Ukara, you're right, these are variations of 'u' used at the end of Malayalam words. --Keral8(talk) 20:53, 30 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your helpful comments and pointers.--C.R.Selvakumar(talk) 01:19, 31 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2010 (UTC)
